PLATE NO. 008Canis lupus familiaris
Beagle
FIG. 008

Specimen

Beagle

An ancient scent hound from England, bred since the 1500s for hunting rabbits and hares in packs, the Beagle pairs an unstoppable nose with a sunny disposition. Friendly with everyone — children, strangers, other dogs — and remarkably affordable to feed and maintain for a medium dog. The trade-offs are loud baying that carries for miles, food obsession that leads to obesity, and an independent streak that makes off-leash recall a lifelong project.
