PLATE NO. 011Canis lupus familiaris
Yorkshire Terrier
FIG. 011

Specimen

Yorkshire Terrier

Bred in the textile mills of 19th-century Yorkshire to hunt rats among the looms, the modern Yorkie was refined into a glamorous toy weighing under 3 kg. Despite their tiny size they have terrier confidence and will fearlessly challenge much bigger dogs. The silky, steel-blue-and-tan coat barely sheds and is allergy-friendly, but full-length show coats need daily brushing. Long-lived (13–16 years), portable, and ideal for solo adults — not the right pick for rough-playing toddlers.
