Descended from Roman drover dogs that herded cattle across the Alps, the breed was perfected in the German town of Rottweil during the Middle Ages as a butcher's guardian. Today's Rottweiler is calm, confident, and deeply devoted to family. Properly trained from puppyhood, they are gentle giants; mishandled, they can be dangerous. The lifespan is sadly short (8–10 years) and breed-restriction laws apply in many cities and insurance policies.
