Native to Mexico and named after the state of Chihuahua, this is the world's smallest breed (1.5–3 kg) and traces back to the ancient Techichi dog of the Toltec civilization. Despite their size they have outsized personalities, often bonding intensely to a single person and viewing the rest of humanity with suspicion. The lifespan is exceptional (14–18 years) and ownership costs are tiny. The catch: they shiver in cool weather, often snap at strangers, and are too fragile for households with toddlers.
