PLATE NO. 015Canis lupus familiaris
Australian Shepherd
FIG. 015

Specimen

Australian Shepherd

Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was actually developed in 19th-century California — refined from Basque shepherd dogs and used to work sheep ranches in the American West. The striking merle coats (often with two-colored eyes) and athletic build make them photogenic, but underneath is a high-drive herding dog that bonds intensely with one family. They need 1.5–2 hours of daily activity, mental challenges, and a job. Without these, expect anxious nipping, herding of children, and destruction.
